President Joe Biden delivered a straightforward message to the people of Taiwan following the election of their new president, Vice President Lai Ching-te.
Before heading to Camp David, Biden clarified to reporters that the United States does not support independence for Taiwan.
Despite strong opposition from China, Ching-te, who campaigned for Taiwan’s independence, was elected by voters, securing the Democratic Progressive Party’s continued rule for its third consecutive term.
China had warned that the election was a crucial choice between war and peace, emphasizing its claim of sovereignty over Taiwan.
The White House had previously stated that interference in the election results would be unacceptable.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken praised Ching-te’s victory and reiterated the U.S.’s commitment to cross-strait peace, stability, and the peaceful resolution of differences, in line with the one China policy.
