Officials installed by Moscow reported that Ukrainian shelling on Sunday killed at least 27 people and injured 25 at a market on the outskirts of Donetsk, a city in the eastern part of Ukraine occupied by Russia.
Among the injured were two children, according to Denis Pushilin, the local leader.
Ukrainian officials in Kyiv did not comment, and the claims couldn’t be independently verified.
The artillery shells were said to be fired from the west, with Russia blaming Ukraine and describing the incident as a “terrorist attack.”
Meanwhile, a fire broke out at a chemical transport terminal at Russia’s Ust-Luga port, allegedly attacked by Ukrainian drones, causing a gas tank to explode.
Russia’s Defense Ministry reported downing Ukrainian drones in various regions.
Recent Russian attacks aim to find gaps in Ukraine’s defenses, utilizing a large number of missiles and drones.
Over 500 drones and missiles were reportedly fired between Dec. 29 and Jan. 2.
