Isiokpo, the hometown of the late renowned billionaire and CEO of Access Holdings, Herbert Wigwe, has initiated a seven-day mourning period following his tragic demise at the age of 57.
Nigerians from various locations, both at home and abroad, have been extending condolences to the family of the prominent Nigerian bank owner.
Wigwe, a respected Rivers statesman, was en route to Las Vegas in a Eurocopter EC 130 chopper to attend the Super Bowl when the aircraft, carrying him, his wife, and son, crashed near Nipton, California.
The Nye-Nwe-Eli of Isiokpo, Eze Blessing Ahiazunwo Wagor, announced the seven-day mourning starting on Wednesday, with businesses closing on the first and last days, and operating half-day on the remaining days.
Residents of Isiokpo have donned black attire in solidarity during this mourning period.
Reports from the National Transportation Safety Board mention adverse weather conditions, including rain and wintry mix, at the time of the accident.
Notable figures like President Bola Tinubu, WTO boss Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have offered tributes to Herbert Wigwe.
Aliko Dangote, Governor Dapo Abiodun, Pat Utomi, Atedo Peterside, and others paid their respects during a visit to the late CEO’s parents, expressing condolences for the tragic loss of Herbert Wigwe, his wife, and son in the helicopter accident.
