The Federal Government initially stated that UK lawyers could practice in Nigeria under an Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership.
However, following criticism, Trade and Investment Minister Doris Uzoka-Anite clarified that there is no such provision in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). She emphasized that Nigeria lacks a Mutual Recognition Agreement with the UK and reaffirmed that foreign licensed lawyers, including those from the UK, cannot currently practice in Nigeria as per the MoU.
The issue has sparked ongoing discussions among legal practitioners in both countries.
NBA President Yakubu Maikyau criticized the earlier statement as “ridiculous, unpatriotic, and uninformed.”
