Quincy Promes, once a touted player for Manchester United, now faces a six-year prison term for drug trafficking, according to the Amsterdam District Court.
The former Dutch international, now playing for Spartak Moscow, was accused of orchestrating the import and export of large amounts of cocaine in 2020.
Despite residing in Moscow, he abstained from his trial in the Netherlands.
Accused of smuggling 1,360kg of cocaine, the court sentenced Promes to six years, while prosecutors sought a nine-year term.
Phone taps provided evidence of his direct involvement in drug trafficking, concealing drugs within shipments of Brazilian salt.
The court expressed disdain for Promes’s participation in illicit activities, given his successful career and significant social media following.
Despite vehement denials from his legal team, Promes plans to appeal the verdict. He is also contesting an 18-month sentence for assault related to a 2020 altercation.
The once-promising football talent now faces an uncertain future, entangled in legal battles to overturn his convictions.
