A little-known chemical called chlormequat, found in popular oat-based foods like Cheerios and Quaker Oats, has been linked to reduced fertility and other health concerns, according to a study by the Environmental Working Group.
About 80% of Americans tested positive for this harmful pesticide, and it’s federally allowed on oats and other grains imported to the US.
The study found chlormequat in 92% of oat-based foods tested in May 2023, including major brands like Quaker Oats and Cheerios.
The EWG urges consumers to choose organic oat products to avoid exposure to synthetic pesticides like chlormequat.
