The Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE) has delisted seven universities from India and Cyprus from its approved list, following a request to the International Institute of Philanthropy (IIP) to withdraw honorary Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees awarded to prominent individuals.
ZIMCHE emphasized the importance of verifying accreditation status before enrollment to avoid financial loss and academic repercussions.
Additionally, ZIMCHE nullified awards granted by IIP, citing violations of Zimbabwean laws, and instructed IIP to retract all conferred degrees publicly.
Notable individuals, including Eric Francis Niyonsaba, Mudiwa Hood, Dilesh Nguwaya, and Geo Pomona Waste Management, were among those granted degrees by IIP.
Prospective recipients were reportedly required to pay a fee of US$1,000 to attend the conferment ceremony.
