Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, has issued a directive for the reopening of Nigeria’s land and air borders with Niger Republic, along with the lifting of other sanctions against the country.
This decision, outlined in a statement titled ‘Nigeria opens land and air borders with Republic of Niger, lifts other sanctions,’ was made in response to recent actions taken by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
At their extraordinary summit on February 24, 2024, in Abuja, ECOWAS leaders lifted economic and travel sanctions on Niger, Mali, and Guinea.
As a result, President Tinubu instructed the immediate lifting of various sanctions imposed on the Republic of Niger, including the closure of borders, the suspension of commercial and financial transactions, asset freezes, and travel bans on government officials and their families.
