According to a recent announcement by Meta, Nigerian content creators will have the opportunity to monetize their work starting in June 2024.
The announcement, made jointly by Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Meta, highlighted a conversation between Sir Nick Clegg, President of Global Affairs of Meta, and President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.
Ajuri Ngelale, a presidential spokesman, conveyed that Sir Clegg praised Tinubu for facilitating an executive order allowing Meta-backed deep-sea cable to land in Nigeria, significantly expanding internet infrastructure.
This infrastructure project, expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2025, is anticipated to double the capacity of current subsea cables and potentially boost economic activity in Africa by up to $37 billion over the next few years.
President Tinubu expressed hope for increased Meta investment in Nigeria, especially in the younger generation, emphasizing the importance of preparing Nigerian youth for the future global economy, which will likely be heavily influenced by artificial intelligence.
Tinubu also emphasized Nigeria’s openness to commerce and ambition to lead digital technology innovation in Africa, emphasizing the importance of cooperation for mutual benefit and technological advancement.
