A Nigerian YouTuber residing in the United Kingdom, Emdee Tiamiyu, has been detained on suspicion of fraudulent activities.
In a widely circulated video on social media, Tiamiyu, who gained attention a few months back for a contentious interview with the BBC regarding Nigerian immigrants, is now under scrutiny for a financial dispute involving the UK government.
The controversy stems from a recent BBC interview where Tiamiyu made comments about Nigerian students in the UK, implying that many exploit the student visa system for employment and to relocate their families to the country.
This interview reportedly influenced the UK government’s decision to implement restrictions on Nigerian students, notably preventing them from bringing family members to the UK unless they are enrolled in PhD programs.
Subsequent to the contentious interview, Tiamiyu is accused of defrauding the UK government of £160,000.
Reports indicate that the funds, intended for resettlement purposes, were diverted by Tiamiyu to build a house in his hometown of Ogun State, Nigeria.
