British Foreign Secretary David Cameron stated on Wednesday that Israel has indicated its intention to respond to recent attacks launched by Iran against Israel over the weekend.
Cameron made these remarks during his visit to Israel on Wednesday, shortly after Iran conducted a missile and drone attack against the U.S. ally.
Speaking to reporters after meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Cameron emphasized the UK’s support for Israel and urged for deescalation.
“The situation is highly concerning. It’s important to demonstrate solidarity with Israel and express our clear views on what should happen next,” Cameron said, as reported by the Foreign Ministry office.
He added, “However, it’s evident that Israel is preparing to take action. We hope they will do so in a manner that minimizes escalation.”
The specific nature of Israel’s response, if they choose to respond, remains unclear.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated on Wednesday that Israel will independently decide its course of action.”We appreciate the support of our allies in defending Israel, both in words and actions. While we value their suggestions and advice, I want to clarify that Israel will make its own decisions. The State of Israel will take all necessary measures to defend itself,” Netanyahu stated in remarks released by his office.
According to a report by Axios on Wednesday, Israel contemplated striking Iran on Monday but opted to delay, based on insights from Israeli and U.S. sources.
An official acknowledged uncertainty regarding the timing and feasibility of an actual attack.
President Biden is striving to avoid further conflict with Iran following the joint efforts to thwart Saturday’s missile and drone assault on Israel.
John Kirby, White House National Security Communications Advisor, emphasized the U.S. stance on deescalating tensions in the Middle East.
“The Prime Minister is aware that the President is committed to preventing a conflict with Iran and wishes to avoid further escalation of tensions.
Since October 7, the President has been actively working to prevent a broader regional conflict,” Kirby stated on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”
