In a heartwarming display of compassion and community support, the Vodafone Ghana Foundation has stepped up to assist the victims of the recent Akosombo Dam spillage. The foundation, along with dedicated employee volunteers, embarked on a mission to provide relief to those affected by the disaster in Mepe, situated in the Volta Region, and Asuogyaman, located in the Eastern Region.
The relief efforts included the donation of essential items, such as camp tents, treated mosquito nets, student mattresses, food supplies, and clean water to the displaced individuals. Moreover, earlier in the same month, Vodafone Ghana had introduced a commendable initiative of zero-rated calls for Vodafone-to-Vodafone calls in the affected areas, set to continue until the end of October 2023.
This initiative was designed with the noble purpose of alleviating the hardships faced by those who found themselves displaced and exemplifies Vodafone Ghana’s steadfast commitment to creating meaningful connections and actively contributing to the well-being of the communities it serves.
Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson, the Foundation, Sustainability, and External Communications Manager at Vodafone Ghana, expressed her empathy, stating, “We stand in solidarity with the victims of this unfortunate incident. As a leading presence in the Ghanaian business landscape, it is our duty to offer support during such critical times. In addition to the relief items generously donated by the Foundation, Vodafone Ghana employees also rallied together, contributing items and funds through an employee Vodafone Cash account to assist the victims. I am particularly proud of our employees for generously volunteering their time to engage with and uplift the victims during this challenging period.”
Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for the North Tongu constituency, conveyed his appreciation for Vodafone Ghana’s thoughtful intervention. He remarked, “I am truly impressed that Vodafone Ghana took the time to visit the displaced camps and provide a wealth of essential goods to my constituents.”
Vodafone Ghana’s support extended to the affected individuals in Asuogyaman as well. While receiving the items, Hon. Thomas Nyarko Ampem, the Member of Parliament for the Asuogyaman Constituency, recognized Vodafone Ghana as the second corporate organization to visit the flood victims in Asuogyaman. He noted, “We understand that Asuogyaman may not be the epicenter of this incident; nevertheless, many families along the Volta River have been affected and are in need of assistance. I commend Vodafone Ghana’s dedication to the communities within its operational sphere and urge other corporate entities to follow Vodafone’s example by reaching out to the people of Asuogyaman during their time of need.”
