Rwandan President Paul Kagame, speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting, has made a monumental announcement, paving the way for easier travel and tourism within Africa.
The President declared the removal of visa requirements for all African nations.
This progressive step mirrors a similar intention voiced by President William Ruto of Kenya, who expressed plans to eliminate visa restrictions for all African countries by the end of 2023.
President Kagame emphasized that this decision holds the key to bolstering trade and tourism among African nations. Rwanda has solidified its reputation as a sought-after tourist destination in Africa, attracting 500,000 visitors in 2022.
President Kagame underscored his dedication to facilitating travel within the region by stating, “Any African can get on a plane to Rwanda whenever they wish and will not pay a thing to enter our country.”
The elimination of visa requirements aligns with President Kagame’s vision of fostering seamless travel throughout the African continent. This initiative aims to stimulate increased tourism, trade, and cultural exchange among African nations.
President William Ruto of Kenya, during his visit to Rwanda, also expressed a similar commitment to simplify travel procedures among African countries. “By the end of this year, no African will be required to have a visa to come to Kenya,” he declared.
This move follows Kenya’s existing policy of granting visa-free entry to nationals from over 40 countries, including more than 15 African nations.
Tourists visiting Rwanda are drawn to its unique attractions, particularly the renowned game parks featuring gorillas and wildlife.
Additionally, Rwanda’s commitment to cleanliness and orderliness has earned it a reputation as one of the cleanest countries in Africa.
Moreover, Rwanda has emerged as a formidable competitor to Nairobi in East Africa, hosting numerous international conferences, further solidifying its status as a regional hub.
