American meat processor Tyson Foods has initiated a recall of approximately 30,000 pounds (13,608 kilograms) of chicken nuggets due to the discovery of metal pieces in the product. The company has described this recall as a precautionary measure.
These nuggets, produced at a single facility, were distributed to various distributors across nine U.S. states, including Alabama, California, and Illinois. The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) reported one case of a minor oral injury in connection with the recall and advised anyone with concerns about injuries or illnesses to seek medical attention.
The affected product, known as “Fun Nuggets” in the shape of dinosaurs, bears a “use by” date of September 4, 2024. Tyson Foods acknowledged that a limited number of consumers reported finding small, pliable metal pieces in the product, leading to the recall.
Customers who purchased these nuggets are urged to dispose of the product and contact Tyson for further assistance.
This incident is not the first recall by Tyson Foods, the largest meat producer in the United States by sales. In the previous year, they recalled ground beef due to the discovery of “mirror-like” material in the meat. In 2019, a batch of their chicken nuggets was recalled after customers found pieces of blue rubber inside, and they recalled millions of pounds of chicken strips in the same year over concerns of potential metal contamination.
In 2022, Tyson closed several chicken processing plants in the U.S. due to decreased demand. However, with the rising prices of beef and pork, many consumers turned to more affordable poultry options, offering hope that increased demand could positively impact food company profits. Tyson is scheduled to release its latest quarterly earnings report on November 13, 2023.
