A 52-year-old former gang leader, John Turscak, has been charged by federal prosecutors for the assault on ex-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in an Arizona federal prison.
Chauvin, serving a 21-year sentence for violating George Floyd’s rights, was reportedly stabbed 22 times.
According to crime news, Turscak, a former Mexican Mafia member and FBI informant, allegedly planned the attack, citing Chauvin’s high profile.
The assault on Black Friday was deemed symbolic with the Black Lives Matter movement and the Mexican Mafia’s ‘Black Hand’ symbol.
Turscak, facing charges including attempted murder, claimed he would have killed Chauvin if not for prompt response by officers. Turscak has been in federal prison since 2001, cooperating with law enforcement against the Mexican Mafia, but his history includes plotting against rival gang members. He has now been relocated to a higher security prison.
