Nigeria’s Supreme Court has overturned a 2022 judgment, ruling that separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu must remain in prison and that his terrorism trial at a lower federal court should proceed.
Despite the Appeal Court dropping charges last year, the Supreme Court deemed his detention lawful and extradition illegal.
As the government schedules the continuation of his trial, Kanu, leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob), remains in the custody of the secret police.
Accused of orchestrating attacks, Ipob denies involvement in assaults on government structures in south-east Nigeria.
