Nigeria’s labor unions, specifically the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), are currently protesting at NAFDAC’s Abuja headquarters against the recent ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets less than 200ml.
The ban, enforced since February 1, 2024, has drawn criticism from the unions, arguing that it negatively impacts companies and is counterproductive.
NAFDAC’s Director-general, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, explained that the decision was part of a phased approach agreed upon by a multilateral committee, with a 50% production reduction target in 2020 and a complete ban by January 31, 2024.
Manufacturers were given a five-year window, starting in 2018, to transition away from sachets and pet bottles.
Renewal licenses exceeding January 2024 were not issued by NAFDAC in alignment with this decision.
