Nigeria’s Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, has confirmed discussions with the American Grammy Awards organizers about establishing an African version of the prestigious award show.
Despite criticism from industry players fearing the impact on African music’s unique cultural identity, Musawa emphasized Nigeria’s role as the home of Afrobeats and advocated for its inclusion among the founding members.
Countries like Rwanda, Kenya, and South Africa are also supporting this initiative, though some music industry stakeholders are concerned, urging President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the partnership, citing potential harm to the country’s music industry and economy.
