Cybersecurity experts are advising Google users to promptly update their Chrome browser after a recent blog post highlighted a critical security patch.
Released earlier this week on Tuesday, March 26, the update, version 123.0.6312.86/.87 for Windows and Mac, and 123.0.6312.86 for Linux, addresses seven security fixes aimed at safeguarding users from potential vulnerabilities.
Specifically, the update tackles a significant flaw identified as CVE-2024-2883, which, if exploited, could allow remote attackers to compromise a user’s system via a malicious HTML page, potentially leading to complete control over the affected computer.
Updating your browser ensures that your device benefits from the latest security measures, according to experts.
They emphasize that keeping software up to date is crucial for maintaining product security, as security updates often patch various vulnerabilities, reducing the need for additional antivirus software expenses.
Conversely, failing to update leaves the browser more susceptible to malware and bugs.
To protect against the identified zero-day vulnerability, users are urged to update their Chrome browser immediately.
This can be done by opening Chrome, clicking the three-dot menu icon at the top right, selecting “Settings,” then clicking on “About Chrome” on the left. Chrome will automatically check for updates and download them.
Once the update is ready, users can apply it by clicking “Relaunch to update.”
Additionally, users can take further steps to safeguard their devices from malware and vulnerabilities.
These include downloading apps only from the Google Play Store, exercising caution when clicking on links in emails or text messages to avoid phishing websites, using security apps with malware protection, and being cautious of fake websites and excessive pop-up ads that may contain malware.
