Thousands of app users encountered difficulties accessing the three sites on Wednesday evening, prompting them to vent their frustrations on other social media platforms.
Although Meta’s status site suggests that most problems have been resolved, certain business and messaging services are still facing significant disruptions.
The issues commenced around 19:00 BST. Downdetector, a UK-based site monitoring website performance, recorded approximately 82,000 problems with WhatsApp at 19:25 BST, but an hour later, the situation seemed to have improved.
Instagram users reported roughly 3,700 outages at 19:20 BST, persisting for a couple of hours.
Facebook users also experienced issues at the same time, with 1,840 outages reported at 19:23 BST. The technical difficulties were not limited to the UK, as Instagram indicated around 5, 000 users in the United States also faced problems, with WhatsApp experiencing peaks of around 24,000 users encountering issues.
WhatsApp acknowledged the problems on X, formerly Twitter, stating, “We know some people are experiencing issues right now, we’re working on getting things back to 100% for everyone as quickly as possible.”
Downdetector reported nearly 3,500 users in India and over 7,000 in Brazil experiencing platform problems.
In March, a global outage impacted hundreds of thousands of Facebook and Instagram users for over two hours due to a technical glitch.
Meta boasts approximately 3.19 billion daily active users across its suite of apps, including Threads.
