Several dozen prisoners fled from Moroni Prison in the capital of Comoros, Moroni, on Thursday morning, with no opposition from prison staff.
The escape involved 38 individuals and occurred due to negligence on the part of security guards, according to public prosecutor Ali Mohamed Djounaid.
Djounaid informed reporters that authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident.
“The prisoners exploited an opportunity to flee through the main gate,” Djounaid clarified.
Government spokesperson Houmed Msaidie noted suspicions that the escape had been planned in advance.
