Alabama Governor Kay Ivey announced Thursday that Keith Edmund Gavin, 64, convicted of fatally shooting delivery driver William Clinton Clayton, Jr. in 1998, will be executed by lethal injection on July 18.
Gavin’s execution was authorized by the Alabama Supreme Court, following his conviction of capital murder in Cherokee County, Alabama.
Clayton was shot while using an ATM to get money for dinner with his wife.
Gavin’s attorney had argued against moving up his execution, claiming it prioritized him over other inmates who had completed their appeals.
Alabama also has another execution scheduled for May 30, involving Jamie Mills, convicted for a 2004 robbery-murder.
Alabama had previously carried out the first execution using nitrogen gas in January, but lethal injection remains its primary method.
