Harvey Weinstein was hospitalized on Saturday for medical tests upon returning to Rikers Island jail in preparation for a court appearance next week.
The 72-year-old former Hollywood executive was transferred to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan for a comprehensive examination following an initial evaluation at Rikers, according to his attorney, Arthur Aidala.
Aidala expressed concerns about Weinstein’s physical health, describing him as needing significant medical attention.
Weinstein had been moved from Mohawk Correctional Facility to Rikers’ medical ward in New York City on Friday, and is scheduled to appear in Manhattan Criminal Court on Wednesday at 2:15 p.m. before Judge Curtis Farber.
Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction was overturned by New York’s highest court in a contentious 4-3 decision on Thursday, citing prejudicial rulings during the #MeToo trial.
The court criticized the admission of testimony on uncharged sexual acts, deeming it irrelevant and potentially prejudicial.
Despite this reversal, Weinstein remains imprisoned due to a 2022 rape conviction in Los Angeles.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office expressed a commitment to retrying the case and supporting survivors of sexual assault throughout the legal process.
