Democratic Senator Nicole Mitchell resumed voting at the State Capitol on Monday for the first time since her arrest and charge for felony first-degree burglary.
Mitchell participated in votes concerning her own eligibility to continue voting in the Senate.
The first-term senator from Woodbury, accused of breaking into her stepmother’s residence last week to retrieve her late father’s belongings, chose not to respond to reporters’ inquiries after the Senate recessed on Monday morning.
Some of Mitchell’s DFL colleagues showed support by embracing her on the Senate floor.
Upon returning from recess, Republicans proposed a motion to prevent any member charged with a violent crime from voting on bills until the ethics committee of the chamber had reviewed the case.
They argued that individuals facing such serious criminal charges would typically be placed on leave from their jobs.
