The Lagos State Government has uncovered living spaces beneath the Dolphin Estate Bridge in Ikoyi where renters were charged N250,000 annually.
These under-bridge apartments, comprising 86 partitioned rooms of varying sizes like 10×10 and 12×10, were discovered and subsequently removed by the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources enforcement team.
A container used for illicit activities was also dismantled during the operation.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, revealed this discovery via a post on X.com (formerly Twitter), sharing videos of the operation.
Additionally, a Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Kunle Rotimi-Akodu, confirmed that 23 individuals were arrested during the eviction conducted by officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC or KAI).
These individuals had set up an illegal settlement under the bridge, posing risks to critical infrastructure.
The operation involved dismantling makeshift shelters constructed from wood materials and removing hazardous items like gas cylinders and stored fuel for generators.
