Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, expressed her happiness during her recent trip to Nigeria with her husband Prince Harry. T
he couple, who spent three days in the African country, were invited by Nigeria’s Chief of Defense Staff.
Meghan mentioned that they were in a better place compared to their previous visit to Africa in 2019, when she was struggling with negative press in South Africa.
“We’re just doing great. And happy to be watching our family grow up and evolve. Of course I’m happy. We’re really happy,” Meghan told People.
Days before their trip to Nigeria, Prince Harry attended the Invictus Games 10-year celebration ceremony in London, while Meghan flew from Los Angeles to meet him at Heathrow Airport.
In 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan stepped back from their roles as senior working members of the royal family and moved to California with their children, Archie (4) and Lilibet (2).
Prince Harry described their trips as opportunities to focus on meaningful endeavors. “These trips are about us being able to go out and go and focus on the things that mean so much to us. And being able to be on the ground, to us, is what it’s all about,” he said.
Meghan emphasized the importance of connecting with people during their travels. “It’s really meaningful. Just being able to connect to people… that’s what makes it special,” she explained.
Meghan also shared that she discovered through a genealogy test that she is 43% Nigerian, which made her feel a connection to the country. She expressed her hope to inspire young people, particularly girls.
“I always reflect back on myself as a young girl and the type of inspiration that I wanted to see in other women. I hope in some small way I can be a part of that for a lot of these young girls especially,” Meghan said. “I saw myself in them. I see the potential in all of these young girls — and, by the way, in these young boys as well.”
