Shortly after winning her first Grammy for Best African Performance with her song “Watery,” South African star Tyla has been nominated for four BET Awards.
Tyla’s four nominations put her on par with Beyoncé, who is also up for four awards. Both artists are contenders for Best Female R&B/Pop Artist and the Viewers Choice Award.
In addition to those categories, Tyla is nominated for Best New Artist and Best International Act.
The BET Awards honor Black excellence in entertainment, spanning music, sports, film, and TV.
This year, African artists face tough competition on the global stage.
According to Okayafrica.com, Burna Boy is nominated for Best Male R&B/Pop Artist and Best Male Hip Hop Artist, while Tems is up for Video Director of the Year and the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award.
Other African nominees include South Africa’s Makhadzi, Ayra Starr, and Focalistic.
Canadian rapper Drake leads the nominations with seven, followed by Nicki Minaj with six.
The BET Awards will air live from Los Angeles on June 30.
