Sean “Diddy” Combs has returned his key to New York City following a request from Mayor Eric Adams, prompted by a video showing Combs attacking R&B singer Cassie.
Officials reported that Combs complied after Adams sent letters to his offices in New York and California on June 4, rescinding the key and requesting its return. The key was received by the city on June 10.
In his letter, Adams expressed his deep disturbance over the incident and condemned the actions, standing in solidarity with survivors of domestic and gender-based violence.
Combs’ career has been plagued by numerous sexual abuse allegations and a federal criminal sex-trafficking investigation, which included raids on his Los Angeles and Miami homes.
In May, CNN released security footage from 2016 showing Combs attacking Cassie in a Los Angeles hotel hallway. Combs apologized for the attack, calling his actions inexcusable. Cassie, legally named Cassandra Ventura, sued Combs last year, leading to increased scrutiny. The lawsuit was settled a day after it was filed.
Last year, Adams awarded Combs the key at a ceremony that coincided with his new album release.
Howard University also rescinded an honorary degree awarded to Combs and ended a scholarship program in his name following the video’s release.
Combs, the founder of Bad Boy Records, has been a significant figure in hip-hop over the past three decades, transforming his musical success into a business empire.
