Liberian President Joseph Boakai has voluntarily reduced his salary by 40% to set an example and enhance government accountability, according to a government statement.
This decision follows a protest by lawmakers who arrived at parliament in tricycles, or ‘Keke,’ due to the Finance Ministry’s failure to release funds for vehicle purchases.
President Boakai emphasized his commitment to responsible governance and solidarity with citizens amid economic challenges. Alongside his pay cut, he pledged to strengthen the Civil Service Agency (CSA) to ensure public servants’ salaries reflect economic conditions and reward their efforts appropriately.
He reiterated his dedication to fostering financial responsibility and fair compensation within the public sector, aiming to cultivate a culture of fairness and accountability in the government.
