Several badly decomposed bodies, each wrapped in body bags, were found in a quarry in Mukuru, Embakasi South, Kenya, three weeks after violent protests against new taxes, which were marked by police shootings, abductions, and disappearances.
The discovery has raised concerns following reports of numerous abductions and disappearances during the protests, which intensified after demonstrators breached the Kenyan Parliament on June 25.
The Kenya Human Rights Commission reported the discovery of eight bodies at the quarry, some showing signs of mutilation. The bodies were recovered throughout the day, with six found in the morning and two in the afternoon.
The commission called for accountability from the Kenyan government, specifically mentioning the administration led by @WilliamsRuto.
According to the Department of Criminal Investigation, initial investigations indicate a similar method of killing for all the deceased. The bodies have been taken to the City Mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
Prior to this discovery, Denzel Omondi, a third-year student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology who participated in the protests, was found dead in a swamp in Juja two days after protesters stormed Parliament.
Despite President William Ruto denying any massacre or abductions during the protests, recent events have cast doubt on the circumstances surrounding the deaths of those found in the Mukuru quarry.
