A one-year-old boy, referred to as a “miracle baby,” was discovered crawling near a Louisiana highway, covered in bug bites but alive after surviving Hurricane Beryl.
His four-year-old brother had been found dead the day before, leading to their mother’s arrest.
Aaliyah Jack, 25, was arrested in Meridian, Mississippi, about 350 miles from where her children were found in Lake Charles.
The one-year-old had been missing for two days and endured the severe storms brought by Hurricane Beryl.
Despite numerous bug bites, he was otherwise in good condition, according to Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Gary “Stitch” Guillory.
A truck driver found the child and immediately contacted authorities.
His four-year-old brother’s body was found in a lake near the Interstate 10 welcome center on Monday, raising fears for the younger boy’s safety.
Authorities were preparing to search the waters near the older brother’s discovery when they received the 911 call about the one-year-old.
Hurricane Beryl had struck eastern Texas on Monday, complicating the search with heavy rain and high winds.
The circumstances surrounding the four-year-old’s death and the mother’s flight remain unclear.
Aaliyah Jack is currently facing a charge of failing to report a missing child, with further charges pending investigation. She is to be extradited to Louisiana and held on a $300,000 bond.
Autopsy reports for the four-year-old are pending, and it is unclear if Jack has legal representation yet.
