Senator Bob Menendez was found guilty on all charges in a federal corruption and bribery trial. The trial, held in Judge Sidney Stein’s courtroom in Manhattan, resulted in guilty verdicts for Menendez and three co-defendants.
The indictment, first unsealed in September and later updated, accused Menendez, his wife Nadine Arslanian Menendez, and three businessmen—Wael Hana, Jose Uribe, and Fred Daibes—of a bribery scheme.
Between 2018 and 2022, Menendez allegedly used his political influence to benefit these businessmen and Egypt’s government in exchange for bribes, including cash, gold bars, and a luxury car.
The trial featured testimony from former New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal, who said Menendez tried to intervene in cases involving Uribe’s associates.
Uribe testified against Menendez, admitting to bribing him and awaiting sentencing.
Menendez’s defense argued his wife was the mastermind, while Hana and Daibes’ attorneys cited gaps in evidence.
Nadine Arslanian Menendez faces the same charges and will be tried separately due to health issues. She was involved in a 2018 fatal car crash, currently under investigation.
Menendez plans to run for re-election as an independent, despite the conviction.
Uribe, who cooperated with prosecutors, faces up to 95 years in prison and has pleaded guilty to multiple charges.
