Google has announced that it will shut down its URL shortening service, goo.gl, on August 25, 2025, after which all goo.gl links will return a 404 error. The company stated, “The time has come to turn off the serving portion of Google URL Shortener.”
Prior to the shutdown, goo.gl links will show an interstitial page starting August 23, 2024, informing users that “this link will no longer work in the near future.”
As the shutdown date approaches, this message will appear for an increasing number of links.
Google advises developers to update their links promptly to avoid disruptions caused by the interstitial page.
Google had previously ended the goo.gl service in 2018 and recommended transitioning to Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL), which has also since been deprecated.
