On Wednesday, Eritrean authorities announced that all Ethiopian Airlines flights to Eritrea would be suspended starting September 30.
After a peace agreement in 2018, flights between Ethiopia and Eritrea resumed following a 20-year break. In recognition of these efforts, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize the following year.
Ethiopian Airlines stated on Facebook, “We have been informed by the Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority that all our flights to Eritrea will be suspended starting September 30, 2024.” The airline also mentioned, “The specific reasons for this suspension have not been disclosed to us.”
Hanna Atnafu, a spokesperson for Ethiopian Airlines, expressed surprise at the suspension, noting that they had recently been asked by Eritrean authorities to increase flight frequency.
Ethiopian Airlines, owned by the Ethiopian government, is the largest airline in Africa by revenue and profit.
