An American Airlines flight had to make an unexpected stop on Wednesday night due to a bathroom overflow.
The aircraft, en route from Dallas to Madrid, was rerouted to JFK Airport in New York around 10:30 p.m.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported the diversion was caused by the bathroom issue, while American Airlines attributed it to a “maintenance issue.”
The airline stated that Flight 36 landed safely and would continue its journey on a new aircraft the following evening.
American Airlines provided hotel accommodations for passengers and booked them on a flight the next day. The FAA is investigating the incident.
This incident follows another recent airline disruption: in July, a Delta Air Lines flight from Detroit to Amsterdam was diverted to JFK after passengers became ill from spoiled food.
Delta apologized for the inconvenience, and medical aid was provided upon landing. Affected passengers and crew were offered hotel accommodations and rebooked on another flight.
