Smoking marijuana in apartments is becoming less feasible due to new legislation that took effect this summer.
The law mandates that landlords prohibit cannabis smoking in multifamily residences, which are buildings with three or more units.
In response, many people in Minnesota are resorting to less conventional locations for smoking, such as flower beds near apartment complexes.
Cecil Smith, CEO of the Minnesota Multi Housing Association, points out that the law acknowledges the negative health effects and discomfort of secondhand cannabis smoke. Landlords are expected to maintain smoke-free environments and address complaints as they arise.
However, there is an exception for medical cannabis users. Over 40,000 individuals with medical cannabis cards can still smoke in apartments, making enforcement challenging.
The Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) oversees compliance, with violations resulting in a $250 fine.
