On Monday, Donald Trump hinted that he might consider fleeing to Venezuela if he loses the upcoming election.
During an interview with Elon Musk on X, Trump said, “If something happens with this election, which would be a horror show, we’ll meet the next time in Venezuela.”
Trump went on to explain that the South American country, where recent violent crackdowns on political protests have resulted in at least 23 deaths, would be a “safer” place to gather than the United States. He added, “We’ll have a meeting and dinner in Venezuela, because that’s what’s happening—their crime rate’s coming down and our crime rate’s going through the roof.”
Trump’s remarks suggested that a potential victory for Kamala Harris in November could make the U.S. more dangerous than Venezuela, consistent with his dire warnings about what might happen if the Democrats win again.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro recently claimed to have won re-election despite allegations of fraud, with the U.S., the European Union, and others refusing to acknowledge the results. In addition to the 23 killed, over 1,200 people, including journalists, opposition supporters, and even children, have been arrested during the crackdown on dissent, according to the United Nations.
