Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will participate in their first joint interview with CNN on Thursday, following the Democratic National Convention.
The interview, led by CNN’s Dana Bash, will air at 9 p.m. ET and comes as Harris and Walz begin a bus tour in Georgia. This will be Harris’s first in-depth interview since President Joe Biden endorsed her and withdrew from the race on July 21.
The interview marks a new phase for Harris’s campaign, which has gained significant momentum since she announced her candidacy. Despite this, she has faced criticism for not holding a formal news conference or interview, a situation that her Republican opponents have pointed out.
Thursday’s interview aims to address these concerns and fulfill Harris’s promise to engage in a sit-down conversation before the end of August.
As Harris enters the final weeks before early voting, she will face increased scrutiny and prepare for a debate with former President Donald Trump on September 10. While her campaign has engaged with content creators and influencers, traditional media scrutiny has been limited. Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance criticized Harris for avoiding media questions, contrasting with the frequent media appearances of himself and Trump.
The upcoming interview will offer Harris a chance to clarify her stances on various issues and potentially differentiate her positions from Biden’s.
Previous major interviews, such as one with NBC’s Lester Holt in 2021, have posed challenges for Harris, but more recent interviews have shown improvement in her public communication.
