On Thursday, Vice President Kamala Harris provided her most detailed explanation yet regarding her shifts on fracking and immigration, stating that while her perspectives have evolved, her core values remain unchanged.
In an exclusive CNN interview with Dana Bash, Harris discussed her decision to name a Republican to her Cabinet if elected and recounted President Joe Biden’s call informing her of his decision to withdraw from the presidential race after a poor debate performance.
Harris avoided commenting on whether she would alter Biden’s stance on arms sales to Israel and dismissed Donald Trump’s criticism of her racial identity as “tired.”
The interview, which was Harris’s first joint appearance with her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, offered a comprehensive look at her positions and presidential plans.
When asked about her day-one goals, Harris focused on strengthening the middle class rather than detailing specific executive actions.
She pointed to the Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act as evidence of her commitment to climate action, though she no longer supports the Green New Deal.
Regarding immigration, she referenced her past work as California Attorney General and her experience traveling the country as vice president to underline her commitment to finding common ground.
Harris also outlined her economic policy plan, aiming to tackle issues like food, housing, and childcare costs, while defending her and Biden’s record on managing the economy.
Finally, she reiterated her support for a diverse Cabinet, including potentially appointing a Republican, and reflected on the significance of her candidacy in a historic context.
