Former U.S. President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty on Thursday to revised criminal charges in a federal case accusing him of election interference.
His legal team submitted the plea during a hearing addressing how a Supreme Court decision granting broad immunity to presidents for “official acts” might impact the case.
Special Counsel Jack Smith filed the updated indictment last month, maintaining the original charges but dropping accusations that Trump tried to pressure the Justice Department to support his false election fraud claims.
Trump’s lawyers argued the case should be dismissed, citing the Supreme Court’s ruling that his actions were part of his official duties.
Judge Tanya Chutkan, appointed by Trump, will decide how the Supreme Court’s ruling influences the case.
A trial is unlikely to start before the November presidential election.
