John Legend has upset some residents of his hometown, Springfield, Ohio, by encouraging them to support the Haitian immigrant community despite unverified rumors claiming that these immigrants are abducting and eating pets.
In an Instagram video, Legend referenced Springfield’s recent notoriety after former President Donald Trump mentioned it during a debate with Vice President Kamala Harris.
Trump had amplified a conspiracy theory, alleging that Haitian immigrants were eating pets, which led to a heated exchange when moderators challenged his claims.
City officials have strongly refuted Trump’s accusations, but the rumor persists online, prompting Legend to address the situation.
He emphasized that no pets are being harmed and urged residents to focus on living harmoniously and fostering a safe community.
Legend also highlighted the positive changes in Springfield, including job growth under the Biden Administration, which attracted many Haitian immigrants.
He compared the newcomers to earlier waves of immigrants and called for empathy and understanding, likening it to the “American Dream.”
However, Springfield residents have criticized Legend’s comments, suggesting he is disconnected from their experiences since he now lives in Beverly Hills.
