Former President Trump announced on Thursday that he would meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, despite having reportedly declined a meeting earlier. “As you know, President Zelensky has asked to meet with me, and I will be meeting with him tomorrow morning at around 9:45 in Trump Tower,” Trump stated during a press conference in New York.
He expressed concern over the situation in Ukraine, describing it as “a shame” due to the high number of deaths and widespread destruction.
Earlier, Trump had chosen not to meet with Zelensky. He criticized the Ukrainian president, remarking in North Carolina, “He’s making little nasty aspersions toward your favorite president, me.”
Zelensky had angered some Republicans after labeling Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) as “too radical” in a recent interview and visiting an ammunition factory with Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, which some GOP members viewed as a political move in favor of Democrats.
Trump’s meeting announcement coincided with Zelensky’s visit to the White House.
