According to the U.S. military, 37 militants linked to the Islamic State and an al-Qaeda-affiliated group were killed in two separate operations in Syria. Among those killed were two senior leaders.
U.S. Central Command reported that a strike in northwestern Syria on Tuesday targeted a senior member of the al-Qaeda-connected Hurras al-Deen group and eight others, identifying him as responsible for military operations.
Additionally, they revealed an earlier airstrike on September 16, which targeted an Islamic State training camp in central Syria, resulting in the deaths of 28 militants, including at least four Syrian leaders.
The military stated that these airstrikes would hinder ISIS’s ability to carry out operations against U.S. interests and those of its allies.
Currently, there are about 900 U.S. troops in Syria, along with an undisclosed number of contractors, primarily focused on preventing a resurgence of the Islamic State, which had seized large areas of Iraq and Syria in 2014.
U.S. forces are involved in advising and assisting the Syrian Democratic Forces, a Kurdish-led group, in northeastern Syria, close to critical areas where Iran-backed militant groups operate, including a vital border crossing with Iraq.
