The Joint Action Committee (JAC), representing the non-teaching staff unions at universities—comprising the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU)—has called for a nationwide, indefinite strike beginning Monday, October 28, 2024. This action is in response to the government’s non-payment of four months of withheld salaries.
In a circular to branch leaders of NASU and SSANU, JAC clarified that the strike date was adjusted from October 23 to accommodate a Trade Group Council meeting on that day. Signed by NASU’s General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU President, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, the circular explained that the new timing was chosen for better coordination and unity across both unions.
JAC expressed frustration that, despite President Bola Tinubu’s approval for partial payment of the withheld salaries, the Finance Minister’s inaction has raised concerns about the government’s commitment to addressing the issue.
They emphasized that the unions have sent repeated notices to the government but questioned the government’s sincerity. The statement ended with JAC thanking members for their continued dedication and resolve to persist until a satisfactory resolution is reached.
