The Nigeria Police Force has begun investigating social commentator Very Dark Man (VDM) for allegedly wearing its official uniform without authorization in a viral video where he presented himself as “CSP Very Dark Man” and claimed to be the “number one online police.”
In an October 26 statement, the police condemned the unauthorized use of their uniform and insignia, clarifying that they are conducting a thorough investigation to trace the origin of the police gear and how VDM obtained it.
The police also reminded the public that unauthorized use of police uniforms, badges, or accessories is a criminal offense, punishable under Section 251 of the Criminal Code Law and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law. The investigation aims to protect the force’s integrity and hold any offenders accountable.
Quote:
“The Nigeria Police Force condemns the unauthorized use of official uniforms and accoutrements by an online personality, Mr. Martins Otse, also known as ‘VDM,’ in a video posted on his social media platforms.
The Force firmly disassociates itself from this unauthorized portrayal and has initiated a full investigation to ascertain the origin of the Police gear and the authority under which he acted.
We remind the public that unauthorized use of Police uniforms, insignia, or accoutrements is a criminal offense under Section 251 of the Criminal Code Law and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law, with strict penalties for violators.
While the Nigeria Police Force values and supports the creativity of Nigerian youth in content creation, we strongly advise against misuse of Police uniforms or symbols. Such actions undermine the values and integrity of the Force and will not be tolerated.”
