The Recording Academy has revealed the nominees for the 67th Grammy Awards, with the Best African Music Performance category predominantly featuring Nigerian artists. American singer Chris Brown, the only non-Nigerian nominee in this category, earned a spot with his song “Sensational,” featuring Nigerian artists Davido and Lojay.
The nominees for Best African Music Performance include: “Tomorrow” by Yemi Alade, “MMS” by Asake featuring Wizkid, “Sensational” by Chris Brown featuring Davido and Lojay, “Higher” by Burna Boy, and “Love Me JeJe” by Tems. This announcement, made on November 8, follows last year’s win by South African singer Tyla for “Water,” the first recipient of this category at the 66th Grammys.
In other categories, Nigerian stars Rema and Tems received nominations for Best Global Music Album. Tems’ debut album, Born In The Wild, and Rema’s HEIS will compete with Alkebulan II by Matt B and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Paisajes by Ciro Hurtado, and Historias De Un Flamenco by Antonio Rey.
Additionally, Tems secured a nomination in the Best R&B Song category for her track “Burning.” This year, the Best R&B Song category features only female artists, with Tems competing against “After Hours” by Kehlani, “Here We Go (Uh Oh)” by Coco Jones, “Ruined Me” by Muni Long, and “Saturn” by SZA.
