The Court of Appeal in Abuja has upheld Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa as the rightful President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), confirming the earlier decision by the National Industrial Court on March 11, 2024, which recognized Baruwa’s presidency in Suit No. NICN/ABJ/263/2023.
In a press statement on November 15, Baruwa condemned the inauguration of Musiliu Akinsanya, also known as MC Oluomo, as the new NURTW President, calling it a disregard for judicial authority. He argued that it violated the rulings of the National Industrial Court and the Court of Appeal, which had prohibited the faction led by former president Najeem Usman Yasin from disrupting Baruwa’s administration.
Baruwa emphasized that NURTW operates under a legal framework with an established constitution that dictates the election process for its offices. He urged the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General of the Federation to act in order to enforce the Appeal Court’s judgment for the sake of peace, order, and the rule of law.
The court dismissed the appeal filed by Najeem Usman Yasin, Tajudeen Agbede, and others, ruling that their challenge against the Industrial Court’s decision lacked merit.
The three-judge panel—Hamma Akawu Barka, Nnamdi Dimgba, and Asmau Ojuolape Akanbi—declared Baruwa as the legitimate NURTW President.
Additionally, the appellate court imposed a N100,000 fine on the appellants, who support MC Oluomo, in favor of the respondents.
