President-elect Donald Trump announced that he spoke with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, who agreed to stop the flow of migrants through Mexico to the U.S.
This follows Trump’s recent threats to impose 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada if they failed to curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking into the U.S.
Sheinbaum, who took office recently, had previously warned that Mexico would retaliate with tariffs if Trump moved forward with his plan. However, after their conversation, Trump took to Truth Social to say that Sheinbaum had agreed to take immediate action to stop migration, effectively closing the southern border. He also mentioned discussing measures to tackle drug inflows and U.S. drug consumption during their talk.
Sheinbaum confirmed the phone call on X, describing the conversation as excellent and emphasizing the strengthening of collaboration on security issues.
