Denzel Washington has taken a significant step in his faith journey, being baptized and receiving his minister’s license at Kelly Temple in New York City on Saturday.
During the ceremony, the 69-year-old actor shared his personal testimony with the congregation before being immersed in water. He expressed, “It took a while, but I’m finally here,” adding, “If God can do this for me, there’s nothing He can’t do for you. The sky literally is the limit.”
Washington’s wife, Pauletta, proudly spoke about the milestone, emphasizing her joy for her husband’s spiritual growth. Reflecting on their 41 years of marriage, she said, “Forty-six years later, here I’m still standing next to him as only God will have it.” She expressed pride in his example, especially for their children, now adults, who have learned valuable life lessons from their parents.
Washington, dressed casually in a gray T-shirt and black sweatpants, also posed for a photo with his baptism certificate and minister’s license. His baptism comes just over a month after he discussed his faith in an interview, highlighting the challenges of openly expressing religious beliefs in Hollywood. “It’s not talked about in this town… It’s not fashionable. It’s not sexy,” he said. Despite this, he expressed confidence in his spiritual journey, stating, “I’m free now.”
