Starting January 8, 2025, U.S. passport holders will need to secure an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before entering the United Kingdom. This new requirement applies to all visa-exempt nationals visiting for up to six months without a visa. It also includes creative workers utilizing the Creative Worker Visa concession for visits of three months or less.
The ETA application process can be completed online or through the official ETA app, requiring basic personal details, passport information, and a photograph. The fee for the application is £10. Once approved, an ETA is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, and permits multiple trips to the UK for purposes such as tourism, business, or short-term studies, each lasting up to six months.
Upon approval, applicants receive a confirmation email, and the ETA is electronically linked to their passport.
However, a new ETA will be required if a new passport is issued.
Applications typically take up to three working days to process, though decisions may come sooner or occasionally take longer. There is no appeal process for denied applications, necessitating either a new ETA application or a visa.
Each traveler must apply individually, and decisions for group members may arrive at different times, even if submitted together.
Travelers are advised to apply for an ETA before their trip but may travel while awaiting a decision.
U.S. embassies and consulates in the UK have issued notices to inform U.S. citizens of the new requirements starting in 2025.
